Wolf River is a seedling of Alexander that originated in Wisconsin before 1875 (and is named after the river). It has been grown in the islands since at least 1891 and is still found as living trees in orchards on Lopez and Shaw (and scions are available through our annual scion exchange and grafting workshops on Lopez, Orcas, and San Juan). It is a very large red apple with distinct cracked russting near the stem, and a small slightly speckled basin. When cooked it becomes smooth and soft, perfect for apple sauce (you can make excellent apple sauce from Wolf Rivers by baking them whole and then passing the baked apples through a food mill or sieve).
You can view watercolors of Wolf River in the USDA Pomological Watercolor Collection.
