Also known as Snow, Fameuse was reported growing on Orcas Island in 1891. It is still growing in at least one ancient orchard on San Juan Island (as well as having been planted in a number of more recent orchards, as it is still commonly available from nurseries; scions are available through our annual scion exchange and grafting workshops on Lopez, Orcas, and San Juan). This is a cold hardy striped apple with very white flesh that originated in Canada prior to 1700. It is considered an excellent dessert apple.
You can view watercolors of Fameuse in the USDA Pomological Watercolor Collection.
