This large German apple was reported as growing in Isaac Sandwith's San Juan Island orchard in 1906, and still grows in at least one orchard on Orcas (and scions are available through our annual scion exchange and grafting workshops on Lopez, Orcas, and San Juan). It is a very large, red blushed apple, that originated in Germany, where is is known as Roter Stettiner, before 1598. Big and beautiful, it has coarse flesh and is considered a cooking apple, but can be enjoyed fresh as well; it is not a good keeper. You can see Red Bietigheimer trees at Piper's Orchard in Seattle. Photos by Inese Westcott.
