Gloria Mundi is reported as growing on Lopez, Orcas, and Waldron as early as 1891. We have found at least eight living Gloria Mundi trees in the ancient orchard at Indralaya on Orcas as well one tree in an ancient orchard on Lopez, and a unique seedling cross of Gloria Mundi with Duchess of Oldenburg in an ancient orchard on San Juan. There is a Gloria Mundi in the Master Gardeners' Heritage Orchard in Lopez Village (and scions are available through our annual scion exchange and grafting workshops on Lopez, Orcas, and San Juan). This huge green cooking apple originated on the east coast, probably in New York around 1817. The trees are vigorous and long lived, and the fruit are enormous. They make excellent pie when sliced thin--it only takes an apple or two to fill the crust!
You can view watercolors of Gloria Mundi in the USDA Pomological Watercolor Collection.
