This variety has been grown in the islands since at least 1891 and is still found in at least two ancient orchards on Orcas Island (and scions are available through our annual scion exchange and grafting workshops on Lopez, Orcas, and San Juan). The variety originated in Connecticut or Rhode Island in 1832. It is a late ripening large green apple that keeps well and the flavor improves in storage. It is juicy and sweet and used for fresh eating (a dessert apple).Â
