This variety was not found in historical records and reports of apple growing in the islands, but we located a living tree in Eastsound that is at least 93 years old (it is visible as a large tree in the 1932 aerials). The precursor to modern Red Delicious, this variety was found growing from the rootstock of a grafted Bellflower apple tree in Iowa around 1881. It is a large, oblong conic, red apple (the underlying color is pale yellow, but mostly covered by dark red). It is a late ripening apple.
You can view watercolors of Delicious in the USDA Pomological Watercolor Collection.
