Despite its name this apple variety originated in Normandy sometime before 1771. It is a medium, round, russet apple. Reported as growing in the islands as early as 1891, it still grows in at least one orchard on San Juan (and scions are available through our annual scion exchange and grafting workshops on Lopez, Orcas, and San Juan). It is considered a good cooking apple and is called for by name in French recipes, which refer to the variety simply as "Canada".
