Gilpin, also known as Romanite, is reported as growing on Orcas in 1891. Interestingly S.R.S. Gray listed Gilpin and Romanite separately, and noted that Gilpin was also "erroneously called Vandevere". We have not yet located living trees of this variety in the islands. The variety is thought to have originated in Virginia and obtained its name after a family from Delaware sometime before 1804. It is a medium, oblong, red apple. It hangs well on the tree and is considered a good dessert and cider apple.
You can view watercolors of Gilpin in the USDA Pomological Watercolor Collection.
